The Cork Literary and Scientific Society was founded in 1820 and is one
of the oldest such societies in Ireland.  Members still meet regularly in Cork to hear a series of sixteen lectures held during the winter months.   Our 192nd season begins on 13th October 2011 and ends on 1st March 2012, with a break for Christmas. If you would like to join, just come along to the Crawford Municipal Art Gallery on Thursday evenings (details below) and enquire at the desk near the lecture hall.  Lectures start at 8.00pm. Thursday 13 October
Renowned musician Peadar Ó Riada presents ‘An Ceol is ár nDuchas/ Music and our Heritage’, in this the fortieth year since the death of his father Sean Ó Riada.

Thursday 20 October
Captain John Clarence, Head of College, will lecture on the National Maritime College of Ireland.

Thursday 27 October
Joy Larkcom will present an illustrated talk ‘Grow a wokfull of vegetables’ looking at oriental vegetables in Asia and their huge potential in Ireland.

Thursday 3 November
‘Lismore Monastery and Castle: a personal view’ is the title of the lecture to be given by Julian Walton.

Thursday 10 November
The remarkable history of the Arabian Peninsula will be explored by Dr. Anne Davison in her illustrated talk.

Thursday  17 November
Explorer Geoff Somers returns to our Society to present a lecture on ‘Camels in the Outback’, describing a journey across the deserts of Australia.

Thursday 24 November
Professor Catherine O’Brien will present a lecture on a fascinating topic: ‘The city of Pompei: past and present’.

Thursday  1 December
‘If maps could speak: the history of the Ordnance Survey in Ireland’ will be discussed by Richard Kirwan, former Director of Ordnance Survey Ireland.

Thursday 12 January
Patrick Gageby SC will discuss the interesting career of Sean Lester, last Secretary General of the League of Nations.

Thursday 19 January
Gerald Butler, a third generation light keeper, will present an illustrated talk on the lighthouses of the south west coast of Ireland.

Thursday 26 January
‘The Cork International Exhibition, 1902-03’ is the interesting topic to be presented by
Tom Spalding and Daniel Breen.

Thursday 2 February
Our President, Canon George Salter, will talk about ‘Ancient Sites: the Boyne Valley and the Kings of Tara’.

Thursday 9 February
Former director of the Hunt Museum in Limerick, Virginia Teehan will discuss ‘The Hunt Museum Repatriation Controversy - Accusations, Allegations and Responses’.

Thursday 16 February
‘Oscar Wilde: his life and works’ will be examined by renowned actor and director Michael Twomey.

Thursday 23 February
Keith Holmes will present an illustrated talk on ‘The Villas and Gardens of Lake Como’.

Thursday 1 March
Our final lecture will be given by Captain William Wells on the ‘Myths and Legends of the Bermuda Triangle’.
