The Cork Literary and Scientific Society was founded in 1820 and is one
of the oldest such societies in Ireland. Members still meet regularly in Cork to hear a series of sixteen lectures held during the winter months. Our 189th season begins on 16th October 2008 and ends on 5th March 2009, with a break for Christmas. If you would like to join, please come along to the Crawford Municipal Art Gallery on Thursday evenings (details below) and enquire at the desk near the lecture hall. Thursday October 16
Our opening talk is by Jim Fitzpatrick who will present a lecture on ‘Cork’s Northside: a Veiled Beauty.’
Thursday October 23
Donal Cashman will discuss ‘The Green Island of Europe: agriculture and its role in Europe.’
Thursday October 30
James Cronin will give a presentation on ‘An experiment in Irish Modernism: the church of Christ the King, Turner’s Cross, Cork.’
Thursday November 6
‘Chance of a Lifetime: a career in journalism, bookwriting and plays’ is the title of the talk by Declan Hassett.
Thursday November 13
Dr. Jerry Murphy will discuss the issue of biofuels in his presentation ‘Taking Food out of Fuel.’
Thursday November 20
John Hare will describe a remarkable journey ‘From Chad to Algiers on a camel.’
Thursday November 27
The mountains of North and South America, ‘Great Hills’ will be presented by Paul Deegan.
Thursday December 4
Our president, Canon George Salter, will given an illustrated lecture on ‘The Glens of Antrim.’

Malcolm Kitt will create flower arrangements in a presentation entitled ‘Flowers, Poetry and Life’.

Renowned speaker John Pilkington will give an illustrated presentation on ‘The llamas of South America.’
Thursday February 19
Award winning photographer Mike Brown will provide an illustrated talk on ‘Photographing Ireland’s Wildlife and Landscapes.’
Thursday February 26
Ray O’Connor, Regional Manager of the Industrial Development Authority, South West. will speak about “Attracting overseas investment to Cork: an IDA perspective.”
Thursday March 5
The final lecture of the season will be presented by art historian Dr. Jennifer O’Reilly. . |
